Avril Lavigne; Behind the Girl

Pop star talks about recently released "Under My Skin"

April 24, 2004

Avril Lavigne first stepped into the music scene in 2002 with the premier of her first album, Let Go, which sold more than 14 million copies and took the world by storm. Now, two years later, she's finally releasing her highly anticipated second album entitled, Under My Skin.

As a young girl, Avril started out singing country music, displaying her aptitude in talent shows and festivals. Later she switched gears and went for a more rock like sound with a twisted punker girl's look, and progressed to touring with other punk rock bands such as Simple Plan. Soon she was strong enough to hold her own, and sell out arenas for concerts with Avril as a headliner.

Avril -- now 19 years old -- is defiantly unlike your average pop star. She is in a league of her own and can't be compared to other pop divas her age like Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera. Instead of packing on the makeup, and squeezing into a tight dress, Avril wears baggy skater clothes and doesn't worry about what other people think. She says "This is me, and I feel comfortable with who I am. When I first started out, they wanted to put more make up on my face and make me change into more attractive clothes, but that's just not me."

On her latest album, she wrote songs expressing the real her, and she put a lot of work and effort into her music.

I met Avril Lavigne at a recent event and asked her how her new album is different from her first. "Well, Under my Skin is a more emotional album, and I got a better chance to express myself on this record. I really like the way it turned out."

I also asked her why it's called Under my Skin. She explains, "The name just really fits, cause it gives fans a chance to hear what it's like under my skin, and listen to how things are in my point of view. I wrote all of these songs straight from my real emotions."

The first single off the new album, Don't Tell Me, already has a video on MTV. If you liked Avril's last album, I think you'll enjoy this one. Don't Tell Me features an angry Avril who is upset with her boyfriend and figures out that she's better off alone. It's a catchy "Girl Anthem" song that won't disappoint Avril Lavigne fans and most likely will make new fans along the way.

Avril also told me about her latest DVD called My World which features music videos, biographies, and cool behind the scenes footage -- even out takes and photos!

She said, "A lot of work was put into the making of My World. I think a lot of people would relate to it and enjoy watching some of the back stage stuff. I think its kind of different from other artist's DVD's."

I'd have to agree with her. After viewing other artist's DVD's, I'd say Avril's is a bit more insightful and interesting. It's jam packed with extras, and it's a great way to learn things about the young Canadian singer, that you never knew.
